Winter Haven is in Polk County, about 47 miles southwest of Orlando, and is often described as the Chain of Lakes city because of the many connected lakes within and around it. It had 49,219 residents in 2020. It is known for Cypress Gardens, which started as a water-ski show, and for the Legoland Florida resort that opened on the same site. What the lakes mean for a move

Winter Haven's neighborhoods are described by their lakes. Lake Howard and Lake Shipp make up the established and scenic part of town, with older lakefront homes. Downtown on Lake Howard is walkable and revitalizing. Chain of Lakes areas have canal-connected boating, and canal-front lots often have long walks from the street to the house.

Different neighborhoods call for different moves:

• Inwood is an older area with homes from the 1940s and 1950s, which usually means smaller rooms and narrower doors.
• Garden Grove is an established neighborhood with mature landscaping.
• Cypress Gardens and the Lake Eloise area have both older homes and newer subdivisions close to Legoland, including Harmony at Lake Eloise.

Climate and timing

Winter Haven's rain comes mainly from June through September, which is the wettest part of the year at about 26 inches. Frost occurs roughly once a year. We schedule summer moves for the morning, use furniture covers and are careful with loading in rain. Hurricane season runs through November.
