Moving in Winter Park
Winter Park was founded as a resort community by northern business families in the late 1800s, and it still reads as one of the older, more settled cities in Orange County. Rollins College, the Winter Park Chain of Lakes and a downtown organized around Park Avenue shape how people live here, and they shape how a move has to be planned. Moving in Winter Park: what to plan for
Winter Park has more recognized historic districts than most Central Florida cities. The Downtown and Interlachen Avenue districts are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, while College Quarter (local register, 2003) and Virginia Heights East (2010) are protected at the city level. The city's own survey also identifies Golfview, Osceola, Palmer Avenue, Orwin Manor and Ellno-Willo as historic areas. The practical effect for a move: many houses were built in the 1920s and 1930s, so expect original staircases, plaster walls, narrow doorways and small bedrooms. Virginia Heights, which was developed after 1923, is known for large two-story Colonial Revival and Spanish Colonial houses, and large houses mean long carry paths and heavy dressers upstairs.
Hannibal Square, the historically African-American Westside neighborhood north of Fairbanks Avenue, dates to the 1880s and is wholly different in scale: smaller lots, bungalows, and often a driveway that is shorter than a moving truck. In those blocks we plan for curb loading and shorter carries.
If you are moving into a condominium or apartment near Park Avenue or the Rollins campus, building rules take over. Ask for the elevator and loading dock policy, and whether the property wants a certificate of insurance from your mover, before you set a date.
Local logistics
Four roads carry most of the traffic: I-4 on the west, US 17-92 (Orlando Avenue) running north-south, State Road 426 (Fairbanks and Aloma Avenues) running east-west, and State Road 527 (Orange Avenue). If your destination is east of Rollins, Aloma Avenue is the usual route. A crew leaving the city for the west side will almost always come out on Fairbanks toward I-4.
Winter Park has water on several sides: the chain of lakes is connected by canals, and about 14 percent of the city's area is water. Lakefront homes often sit at the end of long driveways or steps, so tell us if the front door is down a slope.
The SunRail and Amtrak station sits in Central Park, in the middle of downtown. When Park Avenue is busy with festival traffic, the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival is one of the larger weekends on the calendar, so check dates before booking a move for a downtown address.
