Moving in Maitland

Maitland is a small Orange County city that takes its name from Fort Maitland, a military post built on the shore of what is now Lake Maitland in 1838. It later became a citrus and winter-resort community and was incorporated as a town in 1885, the third in Orange County. Today it has 21 lakes inside roughly 6.4 square miles, a SunRail station on US 17-92, and a business district west of I-4 that holds hundreds of companies. What to plan for in a Maitland move

Maitland has three very different kinds of address, and each one asks a mover different questions.

1. Established single-family neighborhoods. Dommerich Estates and Dommerich Hills, with streets such as Mohawk Trail and Chippewa Trail, are known for 1950s and 1960s ranch houses on large lots with mature trees. Single-story homes usually mean short carries, but ask us to check the street for overhanging limbs and tight turns before the truck arrives.
2. Lakefront and canal homes. Lake Sybelia and Lake Maitland frontage often means a long walk from the garage to the car or a stair down to a dock. We ask for photos of the back of the house.
3. Apartments, townhomes and condos near Maitland Center and the downtown core, where the building decides when you can use the elevator.

The city also has a historic corridor around the Lake Lily and Lake Catherine area. It preserves century-old buildings such as the Church of the Good Shepherd (1883) and the William H. Waterhouse House (1884), and moving a household next to buildings that old is a good reason to tell us about parking early.

One local caution: a Maitland mailing address does not always mean the home is inside Maitland's city limits. Check your parcel so you ask the right city for any permits.

• Dommerich Estates and Dommerich Hills, near Dommerich Elementary
• Downtown Maitland and Lake Lily, around City Hall on Independence Lane and the Sunday farmers market

• Lake Maitland, the city's largest lake at 451 acres, shared with Winter Park
• Maitland Center, a 226-acre office district next to I-4, established in 1982
• The Maitland Art Center, a National Historic Landmark since 2014

Logistics

I-4 and Maitland Boulevard (State Road 414) are the main access points. The interchange was rebuilt during the I-4 Ultimate project, so older directions that reference the previous ramps may be out of date. US 17-92, also called Orlando Avenue here, runs north to south through the city and into Winter Park. If you are leaving Maitland for Orlando, Maitland Boulevard to I-4 southbound is the straight route. The SunRail station sits on US 17-92 between Winter Park and Altamonte Springs, which gives you a good landmark if a delivery driver needs one.

Because Maitland is full of water, storms matter. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer, so we plan outdoor carries for the morning, and tell customers to hold back any cardboard boxes until the truck is ready.
